In September 2007, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the launch of a T20 league called the Indian Premier League. Teams representing 8 different cities in India, including Bangalore, were auctioned on February 20, 2008, in Mumbai.
There Vijay Mallya bought the Bangalore franchise for US$111.6 million. It was the second-highest bid for a team after Reliance Industrie, who brought Mumbai Indians for US$111.9 million.

Vijay Mallya intended to associate one of his two liquor brands McDowell No. 1 or Royal Challenge. Later, Royal Challenge was chosen, and hence, the name of the franchise was Royal Challengers Bangalore.
