United Spirits founded RCB and named the franchise after its brand Royal Challenge. Prathmesh Mishra is the current chairman of IPL cricket franchise RCB, who also serves as the Commercial function at Diageo India and is part of its Executive Committee.

The previous chairman of RCB was Anand Kripalu, who completed his term as Managing Director and CEO of Diageo India on June 30, 2021. Prathmesh Mishra takes over the role of RCB Chairman from Anand Kripalu on 1st July 2021.

In September 2007, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the launch of a T20 league called the Indian Premier League. Teams representing 8 different cities in India, including Bangalore, were auctioned on February 20, 2008, in Mumbai.

There Vijay Mallya bought the Bangalore franchise for US$111.6 million. It was the second-highest bid for a team after Reliance Industrie, who brought Mumbai Indians for US$111.9 million.

Vijay Mallya intended to associate one of his two liquor brands McDowell No. 1 or Royal Challenge. Later, Royal Challenge was chosen and hence, the name of the franchise was Royal Challengers Bangalore.

He was the director of this franchise for a long time, but due to his financial problems, he had to resign from his post. He resigned from his post on February 25, 2016.
