All-rounder Hardik Pandya has been named captain of the Indian cricket team for the T20 series against Ireland, which is set to take place later this month. On Wednesday, the national selectors announced a 17-member squad for the two-match Twenty20 International series against Ireland.
The 17-member squad drawn up by the All-India Senior Selection Committee does not include regular Indian Test players who will fly directly to England in preparation for the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston, scheduled for July 1.
Hardik Pandya, who helped the Gujarat Titans win the IPL 2022 title in the first season, was promoted to co-captain and served as Rishabh Pant’s deputy in the ongoing series against South Africa. Veteran fast bowler Bhubaneswar Kumar will be Pandya’s deputy in this series.
Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson have returned to the team:
Pant and Shreyas Iyer, currently playing in the Twenty20 series against South Africa, will be among those who will miss the Ireland series and join the Test squad. On the other hand, Sanju Samson and Rahul Tripathi (maiden call-up), who played well with the bat in IPL 2022, have come as substitutes for Pant and Iyer.
In IPL 2022, Samson scored 374 runs at a strike rate of 147.24 and took Rajasthan Royals to the tournament’s final while Tripathi was the second-highest scorer of Sunrisers Hyderabad with 413 runs at a strike rate of 158.23.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, who missed the last part of IPL 2022 and the series against South Africa due to injury, has also returned to the T20 squad.
Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Venkatesh Iyer, and Deepak Hooda have retained their places in the squad but Kuldeep Yadav has not been picked. He has yet to recover from an injury he suffered during net practice before the first T20 match against South Africa.
